Improv Classes
Even if you haven’t seen show you’ve probably heard of improv, but what exactly is it? Improv is simply a form of live theater in which everything performed is created spontaneously by the performer. But it’s not just about performing, in fact many people take improv for all kinds of reasons other than for stage. Improv is an indispensable tool to build social and emotional skills. Certainly improv is important if you’re interested in acting and writing, but improv really is for everyone. Improv teaches listening, communication, teamwork, collaboration, adaptations and problem solving. All of these are positive life skills that also help to build confidence and imagination.
intro to improv
For anyone curious about what improv is, or just wants to try something new. Students will learn about short form improvisation starting with the basic rules of improv through a variety of fun games and improv exercises. No experience of any kind necessary!
basic improv
Students will work on Yes And, agreement, listening and commitment. The rules of improv will be put to work through group exercises, basic scene work and space work. Creating characters will be introduced. The series will end with a class show.
improv fun & games
Often times the best way for children to learn is by having fun, playing games and not realizing that they are actually learning something. Improv fun & games teaches socialization, collaboration and creative thinking, with unconditional support that builds trust and self confidence.
Improv for Elementary, middle and high school
The goal of these improv classes is to build a base of skills that students can use to not only be creative and have fun, but also skills that they can use in their everyday lives as they grow.
- improv helps kids build social and emotional skills
- improv teaches kids to problem solve and think on their feet
- improv helps kids feel comfortable in front of groups
- improv helps kids read body language and pick up on others’ emotions
- improv helps kids clearly communicate ideas
- improv shows kids the benefits of taking chances and making mistakes
Does your child identify as atypical or neurodiverse?
Improv is especially beneficial for so many types of children, no matter their situation. Improv helps neurodiverse kids foster better social and emotional awareness of self and others, increases flexibility and expands comfort zones, It helps children with learning and physical disabilities develop a sense of play, and enables the socially awkward and intellectual types to socialize more easily.
And what about kids who are introverts? Those who might be reluctant to raise their hands in class, audition for the school play or just speak up in general. Introverts generally like to always be prepared and can struggle when things change quickly. Improv teaches to learn to respond in the moment and to be flexible with ideas. It also builds confidence that enables introverts to put themselves out there in a way that is not always comfortable for them.
When they know they’ll be supported no matter their answer, atypical, neurodiverse and introspective kids thrive.
